An accessible and inclusive vaccination programme

Centre allows walk-in vaccine access for 18-44 age group

We had launched a nationwide campaign to demand an accessible and inclusive vaccination programme. Following are the demands drafted by the Internet Freedom Foundation that we are supporting: - Increase access to vaccinations by allowing walk-in access - Ensure there are no barriers, including mandating Aadhaar, for access to diagnostics, hospital beds, oxygen cylinders, medication or any other treatment. - Ensure the CoWin platform is not made mandatory for registrations for vaccinations.

On 24th May 2021, the Ministry of Health announced walk-in access for the age group 18-44 at government vaccination centres. This feature, for now, has been enabled only for government vaccination centres. Private centres have to continue publishing their vaccination schedule in advance for online appointments.

Mandatory registration on CoWIN was proving to be a barrier for those who don’t have access to high speed internet connection and smartphones. This move therefore, will help the underprivileged communities from rural and remote areas get their vaccine shots easily!

The decision to implement this system now rests with the respective state governments. So if you haven’t signed yet, do consider signing the petition to push state governments to implement walk-in access. We will send out the petition to the state governments too asking them to follow through with the central government’s decision.
