Garbage Map
India’s once famed Garden City has a mounting garbage problem, and it’s only gotten worse over time. Despite having a fairly organised ward-wise waste management system (wet and dry segregation etc), dumping and burning of garbage has become the story of nearly every neighbourhood. Burning of waste emanates toxic fumes and leads to serious health ailments like asthma, heart disease and more.
In 2016, Jhatkaa.org launched a campaign to put a stop to garbage burning in the city. We collected around 200 photos submitted by members from 40 different wards and this became a key factor in getting BBMP Joint Commissioner, Health and SWM Mr Sarfaraz Khan to issue a notification against the illegal practice of garbage burning.
Five odd years later, we now want to address the problem at its root. We plan to create visibly cleaned-up wards in the city. Though BBMP has initiated door-to-door collection of waste in many parts of the city, garbage is still dumped in open areas. BBMP’s ward marshals are deployed to address the issues and impose fines, but the practice still continues, mostly at night.
