OPEN CHALLENGE TO CHENNAI MAYOR DURAISAMY: CLEAN ONE SEWAGE PIPE
This is shocking: Chennai Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy wants to lift the ban on manual scavenging— the dangerous and degrading process of manually cleaning human waste and other waste by hand.
Since the Mayor’s stand on this issue is ridiculous, let’s respond with something equally as ridiculous.
Sign the petition to challenge Chennai Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy to clean ONE sewage pipe and see whether he still wants to subject people to this harrowing work.
In December 2013, the Parliament enacted the ‘Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act 2013’, yet Mayor Duraisamy wants to bring it back, stating that the Greater Chennai Corporation will seek legal recourse to defy the ban. And all of this is happening because the Mayor is panicking about not being prepared enough for the monsoon, even after they spent 16 crores on special drain cleaning machines.
At least 17 people have died between 2003 and 2008 while trying to clear blocked drains, and this doesn’t even take into account the number of deaths caused by diseases. What’s worse is that manual scavenging reinforces the caste system — only “lower castes” are employed to do this work for meagre salaries.
The Mayor knows all these facts but he’s still planning to take action to lift the ban. However, if we publicly challenge him to do the undignified work of manual scavenging himself, he may understand why it needs to remain banned. Through your voice, we can shine a spotlight on Duraisamy’s plan and call his ridiculous stand out in front of the media, his peers, and the people of Chennai whom he’s accountable to.
Sign the petition to tell Duraisamy — clean one sewage pipe so that you can better understand what you’re asking people to do.
