Speak Out Against Rape!
In the last few weeks alone, there have been five high-profile, horrific sexual attacks of women and girls in Delhi, Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh and Gurgaon– one of them a small child of just five years of age. These events didn’t happen in a vacuum. They happened in a culture where all too often, women are blamed for the crimes against them.
Our blood boils when we hear of such cruel acts, but we wonder if there is anything we can do.
The Delhi police are pursuing the suspects, and we hope those responsible will face justice. But punishing these men is not enough. How can we stop actually this kind violence?
These terrible crimes keep happening in our country because too many people still consider it OK to treat another human being in this way. Until this changes, the rapes will continue. So it’s up to all of us to speak out, right now, as loudly as we can.
To start, please add your name and comments into the form to the right, declaring that rape is completely unacceptable in our India.
In the coming week, the Jhatkaa team will announce the total signatures and read many of your comments on a national radio broadcast, reaching tens of millions of homes across India.
What will this accomplish? For those who already agree, hearing your message may encourage them to more actively defend women in their area. And for those who do not yet agree, hearing your words may provoke them to think more deeply. Perhaps we can even prevent the next terrible assault from ever occurring.
We know this is just one small step. But if we are ever to end this kind of violence once and for all, we must take every step we can. Please join us.
