WHY DONATE TO US?
Development must never cost us our ecology – Bengaluru’s green cover has taken decades to grow. We must not allow it to be destroyed in a matter of days! We are filing a writ petition before the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, seeking clear directions on how local and planning authorities must act when urban development conflicts with established green cover.
In December 2025, owing to jurisdictional ambiguity, the Karnataka government was forced to drop its earlier decision to declare the Bengaluru Cantonment Railway Colony a ‘biodiversity heritage site’. The decision was taken after citizens and civil society organisations rallied together for months to save over 368 heritage trees in the colony, which were at risk of being axed for a commercial project.
Massive public outcry led the Karnataka Biodiversity Board (KBB) and the Forest Minister of Karnataka, Eshwar Khandre, to chair a special meeting. The site was declared a biodiversity heritage site under section 37 of the Biological Diversity Act of 2002 at this meeting, to ensure its long-term protection.
With the biodiversity tag revoked, centuries-old trees can now be cut down any time to make way for the construction of a commercial complex. This reversal sets a troubling precedent for green spaces across India.
