Authorities rule in favour of preserving Nashik’s mountain range, halt illegal mining projects!

In May 2021, the Brahmagiri mountain range in Nashik witnessed heavy ruination due to a construction project by a private developer. This incident revealed to the Brahmagiri Kruti Samiti (Brahmagiri Action Committee) that such developments are commonplace in the region; hundreds of risk-prone and illegal mining, excavation and construction were being carried out in the Sahyadri mountain range.

Jhatkaa.org, in tandem with our grassroots partner Brahmagiri Kruti Samiti, set in motion a campaign demanding that excavation, mining, or construction work in the region be halted, heavy fines for defaulters, and the demarcation of special non-developmental zones in the region. We visited the State Minister of Environment & Climate Change, Mr Sanjay Bansode, following which a team of officers from different government departments started visiting the sites of destruction.

Pressure from over 13,300 citizens through this campaign resulted in the district administration issuing a stop-work order on illegal mining projects in Nashik district on 20th June 2021!
