Surmounting public pressure and mobilising citizens on the ground resulted in the CEC’s intervention to save Goas irreplacable forests!
Under the pretext of ‘development’, three proposed infrastructure projects would have resulted in the loss of a vast expanse of trees and forest cover in Goa. A group of citizens recognised this grave threat to biodiversity and formed a collective movement called Amche Mollem (My Mollem). We supported this on-ground movement with a signature campaign addressed to the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) – a body that oversees environmental cases, set up by the Supreme Court of India.
Our email campaign also amassed support, and as many as 7500 concerned citizens sent out emails to relevant authorities. This surmounting public pressure and mobilising citizens on the ground resulted in the CEC’s intervention in the matter.
